Tell the New York Power Authority – we want to see industrial brownfields used for renewable energy projects!
The New York Power Authority is currently accepting comments on it’s draft plan to build renewable energy projects across NYS. While the current draft moves us closer towards a zero-emissions grid, it falls far short of what’s needed, and in NYISO Zone A (ie, WNY) only 5 projects are proposed, none of which appear to be proposed in the industrial brownfield areas Clean Air campaigns center on. Thank you to everyone who signed our summer 2024 petitions!
In summer 2024, we collected signatures on two petitions:
- A petition to NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the Environmental Protection Agency asking those agencies to intervene to force a faster clean-up of the coal ash ponds at NRG Huntley, especially given EPA’s recent steps to strengthen ash pond clean-up compliance, and
- A petition to National Grid asking them to allow the Town of Tonawanda to move forward with plans to turn the Cherry Farm coal ash landfill into a public riverfront park and to replace the playground equipment at Kaufmann Avenue.
Most petition signatures we simply mailed, but we delivered signatures collected to DEC Region 9’s office on Halloween!
